This type of conflict is evident in Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises within many of the characters. Brett, however, is the most prominent example because of the way she copes with this war. She soldiers through, while some of the closest people to her never even notice. Always appearing happy and unaffected on the outside, Brett faces the toughest struggle out of all the characters on the inside. At the root of the conflict, Brett has a love for Jake that is kept a secret. The emotion Romero radiates from his performances is easily felt and enjoyed by Brett and Jake. Even though they can t be together physically, because of Jake s impotence, they can at least be together emotionally while Brett maintains her responsibility of satisfying her physical need elsewhere. Brett has two sides to her: her emotional love for Jake, and the physical hunger for intimacy. Increasingly wanting to be with Jake, she must meet her physical needs first.
